Restoration and interior design of a former brick kiln converted into a family home — Pontassieve, Florence Province, Tuscany.
Farmhouse Le Fornacine is the restoration of an old kiln building that once belonged to the Fattoria di Gragnano, a large historic rural estate in the hills above Pontassieve, east of Florence. The house was commissioned by an international couple — she from Mexico, he from Canada — who chose to leave their home countries and settle permanently in the Tuscan countryside.
The Project
Rather than reinventing the building, the project started from what was already there. The original layout of the kiln was kept and reused: existing rooms, openings and volumes were given new functions instead of being demolished and redrawn. This approach preserved the character and proportions of a working rural building while turning it into a comfortable, contemporary home of about 320 m².
Interior Design
Studio Feri Associati designed the interiors as a continuation of the restoration: materials, finishes, lighting and furnishings were chosen to work with the original spaces rather than against them, creating warm, liveable rooms that reflect a family bringing two cultures into one Tuscan home.
