Traditional Borgo Restoration in Cervognano: Historic Elegance Among the Montepulciano Vineyards

The project in Cervognano, within the municipality of Montepulciano (SI), is a large-scale restoration and repurposing commission for an Italian couple. The complex was designed with a dual soul: a refined private residence and a high-end agritourism hospitality facility.

The core of the project was the conservative restoration of the original volumes, enhancing the property's dominant position overlooking the prestigious vineyards of Montepulciano. The primary objective was to bring the ancient splendor of the borgo back to light while offering modern outdoor spaces in perfect harmony with the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The Project: Recovering Sienese Brickwork and Rural Architecture

The intervention focused on maximum material authenticity, concentrating on the structural consolidation and architectural restoration of the facades and outbuildings:

Traditional Elements: The structures maintain the iconic alternation of local stone and Sienese terracotta brickwork. We meticulously restored the original openings, preserving the arched portals and historical loggias. For the external walkways and pool edges, large travertine slabs were chosen to provide luminosity and visual continuity with the warm tones of the facades.
Modernity and Outdoor Living: Modernity is expressed through the management of outdoor flows and the creation of a monumental pool area. The rectangular swimming pool, surrounded by a travertine solarium, is sheltered by a modern wooden pergola that echoes the essential lines of rural architecture without weighing it down.
Signature Landscaping: Great importance was placed on the landscape design, realized in collaboration with Margheriti Piante. The garden was designed to blend gently into the surrounding cultivation, alternating manicured lawn areas with native tree species and lavender, framing panoramic views over the Val di Chiana.

Project Management

In this specific intervention, the Studio acted as Project Manager, responsible for the architectural design and structural restoration. For this project, the scope of work did not include interior design. We coordinated the entire recovery process, ensuring executive quality and direct supervision of every construction phase, guaranteeing a seamless integration between the historic structures and the new outdoor arrangements.
